I've done by booking one way Sydney flights to NZ from the Australian website. You will be billed in the local website currency. As long as your travel documentation allows there is nothing illegal.

Given the current state of the Air NZ IT systems in disarray such as SP accrual, it wouldn't surprise me if it would have trouble figuring out where it was ticketed.
