It is rarely necessary to take so much baggage for a family visit unless visiting relatives who want you to bring them things not available in their country, or you plan multiple activities that all require special clothing or gear.

Could you do laundry at your stepson's? That would reduce the amount of clothing you need to take.

If you decide to use carry-on bags that are close to or at the maximum permitted size, check the measurements carefully. For example, for two weeks in Europe with only a carry-on bag and a very small personal item, I found it necessary to carry a blazer over my arm on the air-travel days. It would fit in the bag, but it made the bag too thick.

Regardless of what you ultimately do, make sure that your personal items (smaller than the largest permitted carry-on bag, typically not more than 36 linear inches) contain all must-have items. Typically, these would be prescription medicines and small amounts of non-prescription medicines; toiletries and cosmetics that you would need on your first day at the destination; one change of clothing; and anything you expect to want while en route, including small and quiet toys for your child.
