DOT rules (transborder flights) require that you were involuntarily denied boarding and the flight was oversold. Not that it was the REASON for the IDB.

This is the sort of situation for which there ought to be some compensation mechanism. But I doubt that there currently is one.
I got 5k miles for each of us in this situation:
IDB out of the US for reasons other than an oversell
IDB due to AC's stupidity is grounds for compensation.
In this situation, I'm not sure, but it's probably worth writing in if only because it will alert them that a problem like this occurred.
