Apparently there is a recent EU court ruling that rejects the wording 'Final destination' in EC261. Thus EC261 is valid for your flight out of the EU but not any further onward flights.
Seems unusual as Folkerts case previously clarified it as meaning the full outbound or inbound trip. This was reinforced as recently as June when the Commission issued guidelines to the interpretation of the regulation.
