Unless the list I saw was mistaken, there are differences in the frequency.
The Japanese iPhone 7 has these bands that the American iPhone 7 doesn't have:
FDD-LTE bands 11, 21
And it's missing these bands that the American iPhone does have:
CDMA EV-DO Rev. A 1700/2100
