The original A300 was built to transport a large amount of people between major markets cheaply, as long as those cities weren't too far apart. The cheapness of the product is what attracted financially strapped airlines like Pan Am and Eastern. Airbus isn't for premium markets. It would never work on a route like JFK-NCE or CVG-CDG.
