I fly weekly or more often, not on AC but WJ. Sit up front in Plus mostly. Although I have heard safety demos hundreds of times I do not find it inconvenient to disconnect for the few minutes it takes to watch the demo, make eye contact with the FA, and acknowledge that that is their job and hope they feel that at least one pax is paying attention. How would you feel if you had a public address to make in front of 100 plus people with nobody interested?
Same rules on WJ as AC although they say if you understand the English version you can resume using earphones for the French rendition on WJ!
Not positive but interaction with the crew seems more pleasant with a small gesture like that.

you're supposed to disconnect and make eye contact with them
