So presumably while all miles from all sources counted toward MM (until Dec 2011) AA avoided giving actual miles as the MM threshold benefit. Now that those 35,000 bonus miles don't count as Million Miler miles, it's no problem for AA to give them as the current 1 MM threshold benefit.
Indeed; the switch to 35k miles was not before the change where miles counted towards MM status ; it was never a way of reducing the requirement to 965k
