Not sure what your destinations are in South America, and I have not flown them in a while, but the flights I have had in the past on LA in J have been very good. I must admit, I have also had very good experiences on IB in long-haul J. AA certainly has an improved product, and BA has a worsening product.
As others have mentioned, the choices going west are far less appealing that those going east!
