Absolutely possible and I've done it multiple times, granted in my case it's typically for an unhealthy reason - that of having a ciggie between flights.

Usually I end up with connections between T3 and T5 or vice versa (as MIA is one of those stepchild TATL routes relegated to T3), so I typically jump on the bus to the terminal where my connection is departing from, thankfully head through the Fast Track immigration queue, get a few looks at passport control of "are you crazy?!" when I explain the length of visit to the country will be 1 hour, then after a bit of not-so-fresh air, head back in and through security then off to the gate. Of course in my scenario (connecting flights) the Fast Track queues help the process and likewise I do keep an eye on the time, especially for T5 conformance... but even with through-checked bags (as I wouldn't need to claim them regardless), works like a charm.
