Why are there clocks in the room?

Is the question I asked the manager when we checked out of the NY Sheraton yesterday morning. I asked it because not only was our room missing one of the two phones (cradles were there, but only one handset) and not only did we not have the "free water" Gold members get (heck, we weren't even on an SPG floor, which I'm sure led to the no water), but the clock was exactly 1 hour slow. I spent a solid 5 minutes trying to adjust it, but no dice.

Called the desk, after 3 minutes on hold they offered to send "a manager up to fix the clock", but we had dinner reservations and show tickets and couldn't wait.

This is the 3rd time in a row at this property that the clock has been wrong, although only the first time we've reported it. We told the manager this, he's "going to bring it up with housekeeping" but we all know that this isn't part of what housekeeping does.

Why is that? Why isn't part of housekeeping's checklist the simple act of "is the clock close to correct?"? Why have clocks in the rooms if they are far from accurate?
