I am in the same situation with a family of 5 and from my experience via NY is certainly your most likely source of 5 CW seats to west coast USA particularly if you are looking to travel at any time near school holidays.

Last year I snagged 2 CW returns at 355 days and then checked everyday using Award Nexus for more availabilty. About a month later 3 CW seats came available on return flight. I have regularly had to do a split 2 CW and 3 in PE or WT.

I have snagged 5 CW outbounds to USA/Canada in the past but the return flights from anywhere other than NYC are vary rare in my experience for 5.

Its a question of planning 355 days out and being flexible on your routing if you want 5 in CW to USA - You could also consider routing via Vancouver/Seattle - the former has an A380 on the route and the latter has 2 flights a day.
