As an aside, Hilton loyalists should note that the escalators crossing Yan'an Road have been replaced with stairs. This makes the #2 bus significantly less attractive if you have luggage in tow.
The escalators are coming back! They have been installing them over the past week or so. I'd imagine they'll be available for use in a few weeks time.
For the OP. I am always a fan of the subway to maglev when going to PVG. Should take around 45 mins from Nanjing East and could be less then 30 if you get lucky with the train connections. Entering the terminal from the maglev station also seems to have less of a security check wait now that they are adding the extra check outside. Walk from the maglev to the check in counters should be less than 5 minutes for all able bodied adults.
