It may sound a little silly or even condescending, but go through and look at the manuals or help guides of practically any piece of technology you own - in the "troubleshooting" section, you'll find that telling the user to "make sure your equipment is plugged in" is quite common!
I can tell you that my father once called me in a frenzy about his printer not working, only to find out that the plug had fallen out of the electrical socket!
