I always check as well for the same reasons you mention even if I'm only going for a couple days and using a carry-on size case. The only thing I'm lugging around the airports is my backpack with laptop/work documents. I also don't bring any of the 3-1-1 items. If for some reason my bag doesn't make it I can easily replace what I need.
