Nice report! Definitely puts Amtrak to shame. I'm surprised they operated most of the route with only 1 engine. In July, we were on the Southwest Chief and it had a hard time with only 1 engine when the second engine went out of commission.

NR class locos are 4000 hp and from Perth to Adelaide is very flat!
Also the locos do not provide HEP for the train; there are separate power car/s for that.
I was surprised too about the single engine (plus I happen to think a train looks better, or at least more imposing with two) but there are also the "power vans" as they call them with extra power as
standch correctly points out.
