Seems like a company "culture" thing. Unfortunate way to start a trip when a staff is nasty. I've experienced what you describe but only when travelling alone.

Last trip with checked luggage departed YYZ transborder. Went to priority check in. Fascinated I was asked if travelling bus class (I was) because I had a right to that queue due to status. No enquiry about status (*G tags on bag along with the lovely one from Sears Tower).

Imagine what it would be like if they started with something positive and "moved" customers who really were in the wrong place when they were identified. One of the first things taught in conflict resolution.....
