It's been my observation that Hilton properties are migrating to a paperless checkout. If you had checked out at the front desk, the FDC would confirm the emailing of a receipt. You can ask for a paper version at that time.
Hilton is also migrating (albeit at a glacial pace) to a digital check-in process. When fully implemented, you'll be able to bypass the front desk altogether upon arrival and go right to your room. You won't have to sign anything, although when going through the digital check-in process (as I have done once in the past month), I seem to recall checking a box that amounts to a digital signature equivalent to a pen-and-ink signature a la conventional check-in.
