There is not intended to be a workaround.
It's unfortunate that's there's not some alternative system in airports. Like show your passport and pay a fee at a desk for 1 day wifi service. Since even though I was paying $10/day to Verizon for roaming, my phone just wouldn't connect to the Swiss cell system.
Sounds like the bottom line is that if my phone doesn't work in a particular country, I'm out of luck for wifi that requires SMS registration.
