Congratulations, and thanks for the update. You did well there! For the record, I think you arrived at 19:56, instead of 18:45. Your home flight was 20:45, so strictly speaking baggage check-in should have closed at 20:00, whereas departure was 21:21 hrs. They don't normally delay baggage check-in for short delays like that, hence, presumably, the argument, but clearly they should have been OK until 20:30 or so.
Since you made it in the end then all's well that ends well.
