There seems to be two points here: (i) That the "automated" upgrades never really kick in until just before the flight leaves, so these upgrades are really a stalling tactic while DL waits for first class seat buyers; and (ii) that online check-in does not automatically requalify one for the airport upgrade list. Regarding (ii), two weeks ago I did the on-link check in and since I was unsure that this would put me on the airport upgrade list, I used a Delta courtesy phone once at the airport. The agent told me that I was already on the airport upgrade list.
