I think your best bet is to just reach out to the property manager directly and explain what you've explained to us, and ask his/her practice and what you can expect as a platinum member. (My own experiences with award stays at many European properties have been to get great upgrades, only to go to an airport HI in the states and not even get a "thank you.")
I think that's what I'll do. We'll be staying on a Monday night on the lower east side so hopefully that might up our chances. It's also a brand new hotel, I wonder if that might affect our chances in any way? (do they want to create a good impression right off the bat and ensure the hotel appears as a desirable destination? Would a new hotel have a less experienced manager and might that affect his likelihood to give an upgrade?)
