It is true that the 787 windows don't go fully dark, but I don't feel the heat is worse than on the normal setup. If you sit on the sunny side the shade does get fairly warm as well. Though nothing to create problems IMO.

I have not seen extra sheets for the windows on JAL, though I have only done the TPAC 787 to and from SAN, so can't speak about JFK flights.
