There are direct trains from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh, so there's no need to have a car to get to Edinburgh. It's also not the greatest of ideas to drive immediately after a long haul flight especially if you are going to be driving for several hours and are unfamiliar with the roads.

You can also get to St Andrews by public transport
