I've used the plus fare many times and the key is not to check in for your flight if you're passing wanting to change your flight time.

If you happen to have checked in; then a call to the executive club will offload you and then you're free to then move to your chosen flight.

Yesterday, I noticed that the flight I wanted was full - I left it a few hours and a seat opened up.
