Since many (but not all) FFPs offer one-way redemptions for half the cost of a roundtrip, it's probably best to use Dad's AA miles for either the outbound or the return flight on AA/JL for the two of you, and then use whatever miles you can accrue from credit card(s) for travel in the other direction -- and not necessarily on AA/JL.

I would probably opt for the Chase Sapphire Reserve -- especially if you can get the $300 travel credit in both 2016 and 2017.

Of course, finding two premium-cabin award seats on the same flights will be the trick.
