I haven't actually used them, but i;ve got the "Hotel Tonight" app on my phone. Random late night searching has yielded some very good offers (occasionally 4* hotels in central London/Paris/NY for under £100 for immediate check in). They don't do everywhere, but a sensible thing to download maybe?
