If the landing gear had not been retracted and when the plane sank back onto the runway, would the crew have had sufficient time to stop the plane before it overran the end of the runway and possibly ended in a more catastrophic result?
At -900fpm it could have caused damage to the gear and collapsed. Not sure how the gear is rated on a 777. Those jets can stop surprisingly quick but it'd be uncomfortable for pax.
