I've always been a fan of exchanging some $$ (or €, in your case) for whatever currency I'm going to need before I leave home. I'm sure that is not a recipe for the optimal exchange rate, but when I'm only exchanging enough for a cab/subway trip and a tip, the peace of mind is worth the added expense. I use ATMs after I arrive.
