Great (and long) article in the Juneau Empire about the doomed AS1866, which slammed into a mountain outside JNU in 1971 thanks to what appeared to be the failure of an FAA navigational aid. The disaster spurred many of the safety improvements (I.e. RNP) we now have at JNU and other airports served by AS.

This is definitely one thing good that comes from air disasters. Almost all are followed by changes that help ensure that they are never repeated.
