United or American to LAX would have made a lot more sense, but again this is the DOT we are talking about
Believe it or not, Alaska claims to be able to connect passengers to 17 domestic points over LAX while American's application only mentioned 13 domestic points. Also, American can already connect to 8 of their 13 points via existing service to inside-perimeter hubs and they are by no means a "new entrant/limited incumbent or low-fare price competitor."
