San Diego Courtyard Downtown

Don't see a separate thread for this property . . . .

Just completed a two night stay. Not my first choice, but most of the nicer downtown and gas lamp properties were either fully booked or sky-high expensive for Thursday night, so Courtyard Downtown it was. Overall, a mixed experience.

Hotel is located in a converted bank. Location is central and convenient, but be warned the immediate area is not very pleasant - lots and lots of street people. Similar to staying on the edge of the tenderloin in SF.

The lobby is absolutely spectacular, with high coffered ceilings. It's a nice place to hang out, too, with lots of seating, a bar, and a pool table.

Booked an "executive room." These are supposed to be considerably larger than the regular rooms. Was initially given a room on the 2nd floor, moved to the 9th floor my second day to get away from street noise. The room was reasonably spacious, but had no entryway - door opened right into the room, which I really really don't like. Here are two views of the room:

I did like the location of the room, on a corner at the far end of the hallway, so hallway noise and traffic were minimal. Walls were thin, and I could hear my neighbors pretty clearly. Windows were double paned, and street noise wasn't much of an issue. Carpet was gross. You'll want to leave your shoes on. Furnishings felt cheap but I guess par for the course in a limited service property. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable . . . better than the HR Sacramento where I was earlier in the week.

There's a restaurant and coffee bar in the lounge but it's overpriced and lightly staffed. I walked three blocks down Broadway to Western Bean, which I highly recommend.

Service was friendly and generally professional.

I don't think I'd stay again based on the location, lack of entryway, and nasty carpet. But it's not a bad hotel, the lobby is especially nice, and if the price is right it could still be a good choice.
