Just to be clear about wording... Gate Check means that your luggage is being reclassified as checked luggage and is going into the normal cargo hold and will be transferred as checked luggage to your connecting flights.

What I think you mean is "valet check" which is done for the small Regional Jets whose overhead bins are too small for normally allowed cabin bags (rollaboards).

When you valet check your bag at ELM you then have to wait at DTW for them to pull it out and give it back to you. This can take little while at DTW depending on how slow the rampers are!

However your 1:15 connection should still be fine as DTW is incredibly easy for connections as it is all connected as you won't need to leave the airside, change terminals, and then reclear security, like you do at many U.S. airports...
