N is an economy award. Any non-award (or pay-with-miles) flight on a Delta flight and booked through Delta is supposed to earn miles. If OP doesn't get miles as a result of a coding error, he can submit it as a missing miles claim with his receipt and boarding pass so that Delta posts the miles manually.
