I consider the EC middle seat a downgrade as most do. This week I was upgraded to EC middle seat and called to ask to be put back in MC aisle. I was and at the gate was put back in EC middle anyway. I had DD check my profile and they confirm I am flagged not to get EC middle upgrades but it didn't seem to work.
Hopefully you know that you can't just opt out of C+ middle seats. It is any C+ seat (you may show preference for aisle or window), but DL considers "best available" C+ seat as an upgrade.
As far as upgrades. DL will upgrade people IF they can't sell the first class seats. As been discussed many many times. If they are selling F for cash, you just are not going to get upgraded. Can't blame them for that.
