This is a question about SWU's, I bought two coach tickets from Akl-Oma for travel on March 18. We had dinner with a friend of my wife whose husband is ExPlat and he offered to use 2 of his SWU's to try to move us up. I felt a little uncomfortable and told him we are on the points/miles list and let the subject drop. They are coming over on Labor Day and I know it will come up again, is there any way I can check to see if AA has seats available to use SWU's? I called the Plat desk, she was very vague and said she couldn't really check unless the ExPlat was with me. From what I understand these usually expire Feb 28 so he would obviously need 2 that had a later exp date?
Upgrade space using a SWU or miles/copay comes from the same inventory. So if you're waitlisted using miles/copay, then there would be no upgrades available for SWUs either.
If you'd rather try to use his SWUs, you'd first need to call in and cancel your request for the miles/copay upgrades. Then give him your PNR, and have him call the EXP desk to waitlist you using his SWUs.
And yes, for a flight in March 2017 he would need 'new' SWUs from re-qualifying this year.
