You're mixing things up here. My remark about lost opportunity was not in relation to the policy change, but to the statement that a deadheading FA in J is acceptable.
Prior to the introduction of PY, an SEMM in Y was pretty much guaranteed an upgrade.
I'll take your word for it, but I am not certain about that. I continue to buy J (P/Z fares where applicable) because too many times I would be "waitlisted" for J when booking a flight. I'll never do an airport standby for J.
It all comes down to priority, and this priority has clearly changed.
That may very well be the case.
