You'd be fine if they closed your account. I think they would have some privacy act issues if they told your in laws about your personal financial dealings. Once you get access to membership you are a member, regardless of the relationship that got you in.
I have occasionally heard stories of CC companies contacting family members to verify applications, so it's not *completely* off the deep end to be worried about such a thing, but I doubt it's a common occurrence.
I personally would be quite upset at the bank for involving anyone else in my finances who I had not explicitly authorized to discuss them.
