Sometimes a group booking can fill up a flight (and consequently eliminate award inventory). I've run into AMA conventions (doctors) where 10,000 doctors are leaving in the same few hours and taking every available seat on every airline on some routes. AKL is popular for some big events from China (maybe its a real estate investors convention ).
