I'm actually in a similar situation, and have decided to go for it, though i require slightly less to hit platinum.
taking into consideration all the work/personal trips i have left for the year, i will be short of 5 segments to hit platinum. already planning a psycho (as my gf calls it) mid-week 24hr-long 6-segment run sometime in october.
has been a more-than-usual year of flying for me, mostly due to work, and have been taking crazy transits to boost my segments over the past few months (since i kinda foresaw then that i had a chance at platinum). next year will bring possibly more flying so I'm hoping to perhaps start on that (currently seemingly impossible) 10-year road to Plat For Life. who knows what the future will hold work-wise.
another plus point for me is, since i will probably be flying even more next year, it will allow me to take more direct AF/KLM flights instead of doing crazy sky-team transits while still being within reach of 60 segments. so being platinum never hurts in terms of extra miles, priority wait list (i depart from shanghai usually, so delays/cancellations aren't that uncommon), and better seat selection (my company only flies cheap economy), and better chances at the occasional op-up which apparently isn't that rare with doing PVG-CDG/CDG-PVG, which is my main longhaul work-route. had a friend (ivory) opup to J from PE, and i was opup to PE from Y back when i was still silver earlier this year.
so all things considered, taking a 6-segment run on a single flight seems worthwhile.
