It depends , if i remember well (correct me if iam wrong) , after you reach a level like gold or platinium, you will do a soft landing next year to the previous level (silver or gold) if you dont meet the requirements for requalification . instead of going back to ivory directly (but you need to take at least a qualifying flight during the year

If these trips are paid by your company , yes try to do it , but only in this case otherwise its useless , so just find a way to add few more segments or pay yourself some weekends in european cities . Then the next year dont pay anything by yourself and you can even reduce the frequency of your flights for two years .

If you compare to gold , platinium is good if you do long haul flights in premium economy or business class

You need 20k miles for award tickets to middle east or asia , africa 30k and north america 35/40k min.
