I have an ipad, recently swapped my laptop for a MS Surface pro 4, android samsung phone and a very fast home broadband connection. I pay for subs to Netflix(UK) and SKY and also use BBC iplayer. I use KODI at home.
I'm 'techy' capable, so complex solutions are ok
What suggestions do you experienced travellers have for me?

I can't speak to SKY or BBC iplayer, but Netflix doesn't allow downloading of content for offline viewing, period, full stop.
The only streaming service I'm aware of that allows downloading for offline viewing is Amazon Prime. Not sure if the download feature is available outside the US though. Also, only the primary Amazon Prime member has that feature available (there are easy enough ways around that though)
