Well I ended up actually liking the special meal very much. It was a vegan (AA veg special meal is always vegan) curry with rice. Pretty delicious! And since the whole meal was special, I didn't have to ask to "hold the duck" and waste an animal for nothing.
I think it makes sense to make the vegetarian meal vegan. I know of very few vegetarians who'd give a monkey's, either way. It would also get the caterers to use their brains a little more, rather than covering the vegetarian offerings with cream or cheese!
