I am considering using miles on long haul VS between uk and us and so the second leg will definitely be on separate ticket.

How inconvenient will baggage transfer be if second leg is klm or BA?

And I assume if first leg gets delayed and makes me unable to make the connection, I will be on my own without any compensation?
