I carefully cover up all the small lights on alarms, etc.

Then I leave the curtains/blinds as open as possible. If I'm in a remote mountain top cabin, that's all the way. If I'm in an urban setting, I might have to close them enough to block an outside street light - or someone's ability to look in, if I'm stuck in an older-style motor court.
