So the safest bet is to cancel the return half of your original trip before buying the additional flights.
There should be no issue if the new return flight is really a day (24 hours) earlier than the original one. This is NOT a conflicting itinerary, as if the itinerary is from DTW-DEN, it may be entirely possible to fly from MCI-DTW, before the second segment of the trip starts, especially since these are all domestic short hops. The only problem is if MCI-DEN literally occurs at the same time as the original DTW-DEN, or if it's physically impossible to fly from DEN-MCI/DEN-DTW such that you can't fly both segments. I kinda doubt that, with all the problems UA's CRS has, that it's smart enough to detect that you'd need to be on a Space Shuttle to get from AAA-BBB in time to start a BBB-AAA segment.
