So here's the deal - the catering will still be good, just not as extensive as in the past. They tend to put their better/ more creative chefs on the A380, so if you get a good one, they can work magic. I have never had the whole "lacking of food issue" that seems to have been a problem. It'll be good overall, and most crews do try hard, but it just wont be lavish. I've never been dissatisfied with the food quality, there just aren't as many choices as there were before.
As far as AUH, the problem is that it's REALLY HOT right now, as you could imagine. I would recommend a walk down the corniche under normal circumstances. That's a great way to see a diverse cross section of the community there. But it'll be HOT. Even at night. Abu Dhabi is, in general, a night culture. so, I know you'll think this is ridiculous, but I'd say you should go to the new Yas Mall if you're interested in people watching. It's HUGE, it's very close to the airport, and you'll get great people watching. An interesting mish mash. Again, I only recommend this because you want people watching and a walk. if it weren't so hot I'd say the corniche downtown. But the Yas Mall will be good, and it's packed at night. Easy to get a cab there and back. Perfect choice for what you're looking for. Let me know and have fun.

Many thanks for the offer of recs. Given that the odds of us visiting UAE again are far greater than getting to use the lounge, I think we'll likely to a quick city visit then have the tasting menu in the lounge. What I'd really like to do is find a place in Abu Dhabi worth walking around for a while -- maybe a cafe, some shops, good people watching, etc. I know the mosque is a big draw, but my interest is actually more in Emirati culture. We'll be coming off three weeks of touring in Egypt, so the more low key the better.
What would be nice is if there were private rooms as at QR's al Safwa. It might be nice to take a nap in order to be able to stay awake longer on the flight...
