This is incorrect. There are recent UA trip reports (including one from DEN-HNL) with photos of the wrapped blankets and the pillows atop them in the seats on boarding. The current blanket is better than it used to be, but the pillow is simply adequate.
It sounds like a combo of a lying FA and/or a provisioning error.
