Luggage/Baggage requirements, on Star Alliance carriers - Star Alliance Gold members
We had a RTW trip, on an Air Canada issued ticket. We were flying busines class. We were carrying 7 pieces of luggage, several were about 30 kg.
For its own customers, Air Canada gives SuperElite and Elite (equivalent to Star Alliance Gold) members an allowance of 4 pieces of luggage! - each at a maximum (I believe) of 70 lbs - or just over 30 kg.
I believe that for RTW tickets, originating from North America, the luggage requirements for Star Alliance Gold members is 30 kg each per piece?, and 3 pieces of luggage, can be checked? I believe that the class of service, whether it is first or business class, does not change the luggage requirements?
I was having problems with the Asiana agent at Narita, as we were going from NRT to Hong Kong. With 7 pieces of luggage for the 3 of us, and several pieces approaching 30 kg, she was going to charge us fees, for both excess weight, and excess number of pieces. We did not have any problems with any other Star Alliance carriers, on our itinerary - including Air Canada, Austrian, Singapore, and ANA.
I understand that each own airline, within Star Alliance, may have different luggage allowances, and this may vary with the geographic origin and destination of the flight? - some places, even with business class seats, but not a Star Alliance Gold member - one is only allowed 2 pieces, and a maximum weight of 20 kg (for both pieces together?).
