Their systems can see awards that are available at the lowest AS level. They cannot see the higher coach redemptions that AS has.

No, only the lowest level.
You need to do the work to feed to the agent the specific flight that you want. As long as it is the lowest level that AS shows, the agent should have 1:1 correlation. Also, you can check on AA.com. You need to look for nonstop AS flights as BA charges per segment. For example, on Jan 4, I found SAN-HNL and SEA-HNL on AA.com. But both were using the SJC-HNL flight. That's the one you could book.
